Josef Čapek was a supporter of democracy and human rights, and was critical of authoritarianism and fascism. He was arrested by the Nazis in 1939 and died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. Despite his relatively short life, Josef Čapek made significant contributions to Czech art, literature, and intellectual life, and is remembered as an important figure in the country's cultural history.
